You want to free up space on your iPhone, while keeping your conversations the most important ? Store your SMS on a Mac, PC or another iPhone !
Back up your text messages through iCloud.
If your iPhone is backed up to iCloud, then your SMS (as well as your photos, videos, call history, ringtones,..) are copied automatically.
You will be so very simple to restore on your new smartphone.
This technique is especially useful when you buy a new iPhone.
In fact, the problem with the backup messages on iCloud is that it is part of a set. If you want to transfer the messages from your iPhone to another model, you must then restore all the settings of your old phone. Note that new messages that you have received on your iPhone will be erased with this procedure.
Here you will find the list of all the items backed up by iCloud.
Follow these steps to transfer your messages (and all other elements) of your iPhone to another via iCloud :
Connect your old iPhone to an outlet and turn on Wi-Fi.
If you have an iPhone iOS8 or newer : tap Settings→iCloud→ Storage and Backup → iCloud Backup.
For the versions of iOS7 and earlier : tap Settings→ iCloud→ iCloud Backup.
Make sure that iCloud Backup is enabled, if not enable it.
Tap on Back up now, and wait until the end of the operation. Do not disable especially not the Wi-Fi.
Turn on your new iPhone. Configure the if this is not already done. And then, when prompted, select Restore from the iCloud and Next.
If it was already configured, you will need to reset it. Open the Settings and go to General → Reset→ Erase content and settings.
Enter your Apple Id and Password..
Your new iPhone will now have all your messages, applications, photos already present on your old one.
Transfer your messages on a Mac.
If you want to transfer your SMS to another iPhone via a backup, use a third-party software.
For this technique, we have used PhoneView (only in English). There is the trial version, free of charge, and pay, to be around 27 €.
Here’s how you do it :
Install PhoneView on your Mac.
Connect your iPhone to your Mac.
Launch PhoneView, and click OK to the message PhoneView would like to access your contacts (PhoneView would like access to your contacts list).
In PhoneView, click on the Archives displayed in the alert window.
Click Messages in the sidebar, and then OK in the window Now Loading Phone Data (Loading data). The transfer of your data stored will take a few minutes, follow its progress with the blue bar displayed.
The name of the persons with whom you have had conversations will be displayed in the Name column. Select one to see your exchanged SMS messages.
You have the ability to drag/drop the name of this person on your Desktop in order to keep this conversation in pdf format.
To retrieve all of your messages, select All (All), and then click Copy from iPhone (to Copy from the iPhone).
Choose your save location and click Save (Save).
PhoneView can also convert your SMS to pdf to other formats, such as .txt, .tsv , or .tab, csv or .xml, very convenient for an Excel file, for example.
Unfortunately, copy these SMS in the Messages app will not be possible. To read your text messages, you can always use compatible applications such as iBooks, which is a very good alternative, but we prefer GoodReader, especially for SMS messages exported to pdf.
Otherwise, you can send it by email or copy them with iTunes file Sharing.
Forward your messages to a PC.
If you opt for the PC, you can transfer your SMS and your photos !
As on a Mac you will need third-party software.
For this small tutorial, we have chosen CopyTrans, it is simple and pleasant to use. His vesion of the test, gives you the ability to save a conversation of 200 exchanges.
Once the Center CopyTrans Control downloaded, please install CopyTrans Contacts.
