How to use the remote Desktop feature on Windows 10 ?.

In this tutorial, we walk you through, step by step, how to configure and use remote Desktop through a local network and a Wi‑Fi network.

First of all, you need to allow connections on the computer to control. Open File Explorer, right-click on This PC (in the left hand menu), then select Properties.

In the new window that opens, click on remote Settings.

Select the checkbox Allow remote connections to this computer and make sure that the option Allow connections to remote assistance to this computer is checked.

Then, uncheck the option allow connections only from computers running Desktop remote with network level authentication (security system), as this would complicate the process. Finally, click Apply and OK.

Now, to locate the computer on the network, it is necessary to have its IP address (number of authentication). To do this, simultaneously press Windows and R to open the command prompt.

In the window that appears, press Enter. A new window will appear, type ipconfig, and then press Enter.

Data relating to the network and the various connections appear on the screen. The IPv4 Address (a string of numbers separated by dots), and the default Gateway are the information you need, write them down.

The IPv4, it is the identifier needed to link two computers connected to the same local network (your home, your place of work..).

The identifier of the default Gateway allows to connect two remote computers. It is required for the WAN connections, via the internet.

Once you have prepared the computer, go to the remote PC.

In the Start Menu, type remote Desktop Connection and open the application.

In the Computer field, enter theIP address of the computer, and then click Connect. It remains for you to fill in the user name and password.

Remote desktop via the internet (WAN).

You want to access a PC, via the internet ? Follow these steps.

On the remote computer, make sure that the Windows firewall is not blocking the remote Desktop feature.

For this follow the path, control PanelSystem and securityWindows Firewall DefenderAllow an app through Windows firewall.

Then, click on Change settings and check the boxes next to remote Desktop. Confirm with OK.

Now, you need to configure the router so that it recognizes the computers. Be sure to have the IP address and the default Gateway you recorded earlier.

Then, in section Port Forward (port forwarding) on the router, allow port 3389 (specific to remote Desktop).

To find the IP address of the remote computer, open an internet browser from the PC and enter whatismyipaddress in the search bar.

If you intend to connect to it remotely on a frequent basis, be aware that your internet service provider may be required to change the IP address of your box. To obtain a fixed address, it is possible to subscribe to the free DNS service (in English).

Also, a lot of routers have support for DNS as a native, take a look at your manual for more information.

It only remains for you to open remote Desktop Connection, enter the IP address and click Connect. Finally, enter the user name and password.

You now have access to the PC you want to control.
