How to set up a new PC ?.

Who said new PC is said to be more storage space, more performance, and the latest version of Windows. In short, that happiness !

To make the most of your new appliance, we will present here the various steps to follow to configure it : settings, file transfers, software downloads ..

Configure a Windows PC 10 .

The first time you turn on a computer that is running Windows 10, you must select the basic configuration.

The process is simple since it is sufficient to answer the questions that appear on the screen. These relate to the language of the computer, the conditions of the licence, the Wi-fi network, the settings and your Microsoft account.

It is not necessary to have a Microsoft account to use Windows 10, but as the latter gives access to OneDrive (a cloud-free) it’s worth the 5 minutes of registration. In addition, OneDrive will back up the settings and preferences on your computer.

Remove the useless software.

It is likely that your computer comes with many software pre-installed. Some will be useful, others not.

To access the list of your programs, go to your Start Menu (Windows logo), then in your Settings (gear icon) and click on Applications and features.

Browse through the list and if you see software that you do not use, click it, and then click Uninstall. If you are unsure of the usefulness of a program, keep it, since you can always go back on your decision.

Install apps with Ninite.

Now that you have rid your computer software unnecessary, it is time to download applications that you will be really useful.

If you have just bought your computer and want it to be immediately operational, then we recommend you take a look at the site Ninite.

This site allows you to download simultaneously and free of charge a multitude of programs : Chrome, Skype, Open Office, Dropbox, Java, .. Select the software you want and click on Get Your Ninite.

Transfer software from an old to a new computer.

If you have purchased software for your old computer (Photoshop, Office, etc ..), you can manually reinstall them on your new device. For this, all you need is the license number of the product and its installation disk (or download link).

Don’t worry if you have misplaced your license number, there are free software like Belarc Advisor and Magical Jellybean (site in English) that can help you out. Once installed on your old computer, they can extract the license numbers of most of your software.

Download new applications.

In addition to the software downloaded via Ninite and programs that you have recovered from your previous computer, Windows 10 allows you to download applications directly from the Windows Store.

To access, click on the icon in the shape of a shopping bag, white in the taskbar.

Note that you do not necessarily need to download 1001 programs since there are now many services available online, such as, for example, Google Docs can replace Microsoft Office.

Change the default programs.

Windows comes with many utilities (Photos, Groove, ..). If you do not want to use the default, type control Panel in the search bar of the Start Menu, click default Programs, and then click Set program access and defaults.

Transfer files from an old computer to a new computer.

If you want to transfer files from a Windows XP to a Windows 7, the easiest way is to use Windows Easy Transfer (which can be downloaded here).

For the rest of the Windows settings, it is easier to use a Cloud or a good old external hard drive.

They work somewhat the same way since both of them serve as the bridge between the two computers. The only difference is that the external hard drive connects to the computer via a USB port and the Cloud via the internet.

Put in place a backup strategy.

You have almost completed configuring your PC. Don’t lose your hard work it only remains for you that to provide for the backup of your hard disk.

To do this, go to your Settings (click the wheel on the Start Menu), and then in Backup and restore.

There, you can choose where to save the files on your computer and create a system image.
