Thanks to the app Message on the Mac, you can send and receive SMS and iMessage without even having to leave your smartphone out of your pocket !
Before proceeding, note that you must have an Apple account to send SMS messages with your Mac.
How to send a SMS from your Mac to an iPhone.
From the Dock, click the icon of the Messages app, a blue bubble and a bubble white.
Or, press cmd and space bar, then tap Messages.
Enter your username and password Apple associated with your iPhone.
Select the New Message icon.
Place your cursor on the To :field. Enter the phone number, or email address of your correspondent.
Note that the recipient’s email address must be the one he uses for his app iMessage. Apress the key Enter.
If you had synchronized your Contacts folder, then you just have to click on the sign + (circled in blue, top left) to add it to your list of Contacts.
If your correspondent has an iPhone, its number will be framed in blue. The sent SMS will be received as an iMessage through Apple’s servers. Your recipient will be shown your email address instead of your phone number. Except, if he has configured his list of contacts on his iPhone, in which case he will see your number appear.
If your recipient can receive iMessage, then you can simply type your message in the field iMessage, then send it by pressing Enter.
Now that you have used the Messages app on your Mac via your Apple account you can receive iMessage, sent through your iPhone, on your Mac.
These messages will also be visible on your iPhone, so there is no loss of the thread.
How to send a SMS from a Mac to an Android device ?.
If you enter the number of a correspondent, not having the iPhone, in the To: field, the number will be in the red box. This indicates that the smartphone of your correspondent has not the app iMessage.
If you attempt or send a SMS to this correspondent, then an alert message appears on your screen indicating that your SMS could not be sent.
This does not mean that it is impossible to send them SMS.
In fact, simply set up your Mac so that you can send the SMS as if you were using your iPhone.
First of all, make sure you are signed in to iCloud on your Mac AND your iPhone, with the same username and password.
On your Mac, go to System Preferences..→ iCloud. Connect-you.
On your iPhone, go to Settings → iCoud. Connect-you.
On your Mac, open Messages.
On your iPhone, go to Settings → Messages. Then, select Transfer SMS.
You will see your Mac listed, and next to a slider to enable or disable it. To activate it, and you allow your Mac to send/receive SMS.
Then, on your iPhone, enter the code displayed on your Mac.
This step gives the authorization to your iPhone to send/receive SMS on your Mac.
That is, your Mac is configured.
Now, every time that you enter the number of a correspondent, it will be framed in green, rather than red.
Your recipient will receive your SMS as if you had sent from your iPhone and at the rate of a regular SMS.
Note that your conversations remain intact and visible, both on your Mac and your iPhone.
How to receive SMS on a Mac ?.
In order to receive SMS messages (sent from Android phone) on your Mac, you need to configure your two devices, as explained above.
On your Mac, log in to your Apple account, via system Preferences and configure Forwarding SMS on your iPhone (Settings → Messages).
