What is a backup ?.

It is strongly recommended to have at least one backup of your most important documents. You might, like some companies, make it 2 or even 3 on different media (Cloud, hard drive portable, external SSD, USB key..).
To achieve your backup with file History, connect an external hard drive to your computer. Then, go to the Start Menu and click on Settings (gear wheel).
Click on update and security, and then click Backup. Select your disk by clicking on the +sign.
When this is done, the option on the side to Add a drive changes to automatically Back up my files, it is enabled by default. You can disable it later.
Now, click on More options. In this window, you need to determine the frequency of automatic backups and their storage life. Thus, they will be replaced automatically by more recent.
If you want to keep documents located in other folders, you just have to click on Add folder and select it.
At the bottom of the window, the option to Exclude these folders, you can choose not to save.
Once you are ready, click on the Save data now.
Restore your backed up files with Windows 10.
With the feature Restore your files using file History, you can find and restore your backed-up data.
To do this, connect the external disk that you had served as a storage space, then go to the Start Menu and type Restore your files using file History.
In the window that opens, you will see all the files stored on your external drive.
With the icons Next and Previous, select the documents you want to restore, they are ordered by date and hours then click on the white arrow on a green background to finalize the transaction.
This Windows tool is very powerful. Of course, if your external hard drive has its own recovery program, nothing prevents you from using it.
Storage services to the cloud.
Storage services to the cloud (Cloud) can be an alternative to a backup on external hard disk or add-in.
With a Cloud, you have access to your documents from any device and their synchronization is automated.
Dropbox is probably the most popular, but there is also the Cloud, Orange, OVH, Google Drive, pCloud, or even Tresorit.
The majority of these services offers a free storage space between 2 gb and 10 Gb.Windows 10 has its own service preinstalled OneDrive (5 Gb free).
To open an account OneDrive, you must first have an email address in Outlook.
As soon as you are registered, a specific folder to OneDrive is created on your computer.
Each document you add will be automatically saved on the Cloud. You can access them by logging in from any device (smartphone, tablet ..).
Keep in mind that the synchronization of the Cloud means that any document that is deleted from a device the will on all the others.
Regardless of the chosen Cloud, it is always a good idea to have a backup on an external hard drive.
Restore your system with Windows 10.
Restore Windows 10 requires much more than a backup. Here, it is a question of recording and reproducing the state of your PC, or copy the operating system in its entirety.
Create a restore point.
The restore point is a stop on the image of the state of your computer, it will then have a specific date and time. Your data, programs and drivers (graphics card, printer..) will be saved.
To access the system restore in Windows, go to the search bar in Windows and type Create a restore point.
By default, this is disabled. Turn it on by clicking Configure. Then, in the window that opens, check the checkbox Turn on system protection. Finally, click on OK.
Now, every time you install a driver or do an update, Windows will automatically create a restore point.
If you want, you can create it manually, by clicking on the Create option.
Create a system image.
A system image is an exact copy of the internal hard disk (C:) of your computer.
In contrast to the backup with the file History, it is not possible to select the documents you want to keep.
Also, to carry out this copy, you need to have an external hard drive with a minimum storage capacity as your PC.
Before you begin, connect external storage drive.
Then, from the Start Menu, go to Settings (cog wheel), click on update and security. In the left pane, click Backup, and then click to Access the tool Backup and restore (Windows 7).
Finally, left click on Create a system image, and select your destination disk.
If your PC is not working properly, click Restart now. It will re-launch from the image that you have created and saved.
The image copying system is to be used only as a last resort, when Windows is not responding, for example.
Other backup software.
Some Windows users prefer to turn to software multifunctional.
