To sell your Mac at the best price, you need to know its age, its serial number and its physical and technical characteristics ? Or, you want to identify your Mac before performing an update to macOS ?
In this tutorial, we explain how to identify the model of your Mac, find serial number, and technical specifications of your Mac.
How to know the model of your Mac ?.
Apple has developed 7 models of Macs, they are distinguished primarily by the size of their screen, and the power of their processor.
Three models are portable computers, which are MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and the MacBook. The other four are desktop computers, the Mac mini, iMac, iMac Pro and Mac Pro.
To identify the specific Mac you have, turn it on and click on the icon of the apple, located at the top left of your screen. Then, in the drop-down menu, click about this Mac. The window that appears gives you the technical details of your Mac.
The screen, the size, the color and the external ports also allow you to identify the Mac laptops and Mac desktop computers.
What Mac laptop do you have ?.
The Mac laptops have the name of their model, written just under their screen, except for those released between 2012 and 2016.
They can also be distinguished by the quality of the screen, for example the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro, the most ancient, does not have the Retina display (high resolution LCD).
Size and Weight.
Today, the MacBook is the smallest Apple computers. The MacBook Pro is slightly thicker than the MacBook and the MacBook Air (feel free to read our comparison of the 2 models).
The old models themselves are much more large and heavy.
The MacBook Air is only available in space Grey, Gold and Silver, while the MacBook was offered in Rose gold, gold, space Grey or Silver.
The MacBook Pro is sold in space Grey or Silver.
If your Mac laptop only has a USB Type-C for its reload and the connection of devices, then it is a MacBook.
The MacBook Air 2018 embarks 2 USB ports (Type-C/Thunderbolt 3, its previous models are recognizable by their MagSafe port, two USB 3 ports, its output, its single SDXC card slot and Thunderbolt port 2.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro, it has, 2 Thunderbolt ports 3 and the 15-inch boards 4-port Thunderbolt 3 and a Jack.
Some of the MacBook Pro are equipped with the TouchBar, it is placed just above the keyboard. The new generation of 2019 has one.
What desktop Mac do you have ?.
Here are some clues to help you identify your Mac desktop :
The iMac and iMac Pro are the only computers desktop with built-in screen. They are each available in two sizes, 21.5 and 27 inches. Most of the iMac sold in recent years have a Retina display with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels, or over one billion colors supported. The iMac entry-level 21.5-inch has a screen standard.
Size and weight.
The iMac that came out before 2009 have a smaller screen (either 20-or 24-inch), those released at an earlier date are even smaller (15 and 17 inches). Since 2015, the design of the iMac is refined, to not do more than 5 mm thick. If your iMac is thicker, then it is necessarily prior to 2015.
The Mac mini is the most compact of Apple computers, the most recent measure to 19.7 x 19.7 cm and 3.6 cm in height.
The Mac Pro last generation are 25 cm, they are two times smaller than their predecessors. The new model, planned for September 2019, will be wide and 21.8 cm.
If your iMac is white (or any other color of plastic) then it is older than 2007, since their housing is made of aluminum. In 2005, when Apple introduces the Mac Mini, it has the colours white and silver gray.
Their design has not changed from 2010, it is now in aluminium. And since 2011, Apple has removed the optical drive. In 2018, the Mac mini has taken on the color silver grey.
In 2013, The Mac Pro has been completely redesigned. If yours is black and it has a cylindrical shape then you are in possession of the most recent version.
If it has the form of a rectangular block of aluminum, then it is released between 2006 and 2012.
The external Ports.
The new imacs generation are equipped with an SDXC card slot, outputs, USB 3, Thunderbolt 3/USB-C and Gigabit Ethernet. Note that the iMac came out before 2017 have a Thunderbolt port 2, and not 3.
The latest Mac mini is equipped with two ports Thunderbolt 2, four outputs for USB 3, an HDMI output and Ethernet, and a SDXC card slot. You will recognize a Mac mini, which came out before 2011, his slot for optical drive.
Since 2018, the mac Mini has 4 Thunderbolt ports 3/the USB Type-C, HDMI, 2 USB 3.1 and a Ethernet.
