How to find the IP address of your Mac ?.

An IP address (Internet Protocol) is a suite of digital and unique, used to identify your computer ( router, printer..) on a global computer network or local.

It plays an important role in your connections to the internet since it enables you to exchange and receive data between multiple devices connected on the same network (internal or external).
It can be used to track and moderate your activities online, for example Google uses your IP address to localize your search results.

To protect your data, it is possible to browse incognito on the Web via a VPN, such as NordVPN.

Also, for surfing the net from your iPhone without leaving traces, turn on private browsing !

The two types of IP addresses.

There are two types of IP addresses, one public, the other is local.

A public IP address, known external, is assigned to you by your internet provider (F. A. I). It allows several devices to communicate between themselves and exchange data on the internet.

A local IP address, also called internal, is used within your home network (local). It is managed by your router between the different equipments that are found in you, such as your computer or your printer.

The IP the most common are of version 4 (IPv4), they consist of a sequence of 4 decimal numbers separated by dots (e.g. 123.456.789.10).

There are also addresses IP version 6 (IPv6) consisting of 32 digits and letters, separated by a colon (ex: 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:zzzz:c7f8:v54g).

Some information, such as your location (country, city, region, postal code) can be revealed by your IP address, so to avoid piracy, be careful to not disclose it.

If you are connected to your router, then there is nothing more easy. On your Mac, go to AirPort utility, click on the logo on the internet and find out your IP address, it is written to the following address of the router.

You can also use a service such as My IP or just type in a search “What is my IP address” on Google, to find your IP on different specialized sites.

Finally, you can also pass by the utility Terminal. To do this, in your Applications folder, open Terminal, and then enter the curl command ; echo

How to find your local IP address (internal) ?.

You will need to know your local IP address only for specific cases, such as to set up your internet connection.

To find it, there are two tricks. The first is to go through System Preferences.

Go on on the logo of the Apple .
Open System Preferences.
Click on Network.
In the left column, select your connection type (WiFi, Ethernet).
To the right of this same list, under Status : Connected, is registered in your IP address.

For the second, in the same way that to know your public IP address, use the utility Terminal. On the other hand, this time, it will be necessary to enter the command
ifconfig |grep inet

Each device on your network, including your router will then assign an internal IP address, while the network as a whole will have only a single external IP address.
